A Ridiculously Adorable Elephant Story

World Elephant Day was last week; August 12, to be exact. I wish I had known sooner, because I could have shared this in a timely manner.

A while back I visited Sydney’s Taronga Zoo. Now, I feel a little guilty about going to places like zoos and Sea World these days, but the Sydney zoo was amazing. I’ll tell more details in a future post, but for now, I wanted to share my elephant story in honor of World Elephant Day.

I happened upon the elephant pen right at baby’s bath time. It was so cute, I couldn’t tear myself away. Baby’s sheer joy playing in the water and Mama Elephant’s loving supervision was heartwarming, mesmerizing, and most of all, human.

Later, baby’s teenaged brother wanted to join in the fun, but Mama was so protective of baby she kept impeding his path. At some point, Big Brother thought he could sneak into the pit by backing up, but Mama was all over it. He gave up eventually, and walked away in a huff, throwing a little temper tantrum as he swatted a swing to the side with his trunk.

Mama, this is fun!

“Mama, this is fun!”

“There, there, let’s make sure we wash behind your ears…”

But Big Brother wants to join the fun...

Mama said no, so he tried to sneak in by backing up...

But mom’s too smart, she knows what’s up. She tried to block his way.

"I said NO! You will crush your baby sister. You'll have your turn later."

“I said NO! You will crush your baby sister. You’ll have your turn later.”

"Hmph!"

“Hmph!”
